Organizing on behalf of those wrongfully convicted by our criminal injustice system
Justice 4 The Wrongfully Incarcerated
Justice 4 The Wrongfully Incarcerated is a volunteer organization working to create and promote statewide legislation that will automatically provide compensation, education, and other support to help wrongly imprisoned people restart and rebuild their lives upon release.
We also work to implement changes within the prison industrial complex including requiring accountability on the part of law enforcement and prison staff, and to facilitate opportunities for and to address the tremendous challenges facing formerly incarcerated people. We visit those who are behind bars and we support families on the outside.
There are many news reports of men and women who are found not guilty and are released through court appeals or others’ confessions. Many leave prison with no more than the clothes on their backs and cash for the bus or train ride home and a meal. Some newly exonerated people have spent 1, 5, 20, 30, or more years in prison, and most bear scars similar to post-traumatic stress disorder.
Catching up with a rapidly changing society and dealing with physical and emotional habits formed on the inside, the impact of a prison background on future prospects, and a frequently unforgiving and judgmental society, and coping with loss of people and place require time and tools for transition.
